In a letter dated 29 May 2020, the Provincial of the former Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus announced his decision to close the Jesuit Center for Spiritual Growth, effective August 2021. You may read the Provincial’s letter, accompanying FAQs, and Br. Derby’s letter of response here.
While we are sorrowful at the decision, we are focused on the remaining time of ministry here in Wernersville. The Jesuit Center will continue to offer retreats and other programs for spiritual renewal, and to host groups, through August 2021. You can see our 2020-2021 program calendar here.
Already in grade school, I had the inklings that a vocation to the priesthood or religious life was where God might draw me. Career choices such as lawyer, teacher, politician, and even astronaut loomed in front of me in a time when anything was possible. In college, the prospects of law school or something else brought me to a year in the diocesan seminary after graduation. The Spirit encouraged me to broaden my sense of religious vocation, and I was kindly allowed by my Bishop to pursue admittance to the Society of Jesus. Over 40 years I have been grateful to serve in healthcare, social services, and pastoral ministry. I cannot imagine being without the support of the Jesuit community during the course of my life. God has been good to me and I hope in good faith and in God’s grace to continue serving the Lord’s people in ever new ways as the Church and world evolve in the 21st century.
