In a letter dated 29 May 2020, the Provincial of the former Maryland Province of the Society of Jesus announced his decision to close the Jesuit Center for Spiritual Growth, effective August 2021. You may read the Provincial’s letter, accompanying FAQs, and Br. Derby’s letter of response here.
While we are sorrowful at the decision, we are focused on the remaining time of ministry here in Wernersville. The Jesuit Center will continue to offer retreats and other programs for spiritual renewal, and to host groups, through August 2021. You can see our 2020-2021 program calendar here.
Over sixty years, Jesus Christ, leading us in his Society as he led the first disciples, has sustained me. The image of Him calling the two in Emmaus back to the others waiting for the Spirit supported me from my youth. Those waiting for and then acting on the Spirit’s direction surrounded me during my several parish, school, and community missions. The example of Jesuits and the encouragement of our friends and my family strengthened every small effort that God called me to make.
When I look back on my life, of course I miss not having the joy of a family of my own, but I always sensed despite any doubt that God wanted me to experience the joys and sorrows of human life in this Society. Thus God has given me the opportunity in this life to interact with a great richness of commitment and compassion among lay and religious leaders in church and civic life. For this I am grateful, and the experience gives me confidence in the God who is ever calling me to the fulfillment of creation.
"God has given me the opportunity in this life to interact with a great richness of commitment and compassion among lay and religious leaders in church and civic life."
